Create Your Self Care Routine

How to Create a Self-Care Routine

If you’re looking to center yourself and create a sense of peace in your life, follow these tips to adopt a self-care routine that keeps you happy and healthy.

  • Determine what makes you happy – No self-care routine is going to be the same because we are all individuals with our preferences! Ask yourself what makes you feel happy and centered. Are there certain activities that help wash away the stress in your life? Write down as many of these things or activities as you can think of, no matter how large or small they may be. These can range from autumn and certain scents to getting deep tissue massages or a manicure.
  • Find ways to incorporate these into your daily routine – Is there a particular color that makes you happy? Include this color in your wardrobe more or art pieces highlighting this color throughout your home so you can see it every day. Does having a clean room help alleviate stress? Start incorporating small habit changes into your routine such as making your bed in the morning.
  • Evaluate your self-care routine – After a week or so of following a new self-care routine, evaluate what is working for you and what isn’t. Are certain aspects help you feel happier and healthier? Are there areas that you thought would help but aren’t improving your quality of life? You aren’t set in your ways and you can adapt your self-care routine for what you need in that specific season of life. What you need today might not be what you need in your self-care routine a year from now, and that is alright!

6 Ideas to Kickstart Your Self-Care Routine

To pick up new habits or follow a routine, it needs to include activities that you enjoy and look forward to doing. After brainstorming a list of things and activities that make you happy, choose a few to add to a new self-care routine and see how they make you feel over a set period.

Here are a few ideas to get started crafting your self-care routine:

  1. Reading a book – If you enjoy reading but have a hard time finding time to settle it with a good book, make it a priority to read a little bit each day. Start with a few pages a day or a few chapters — whatever works with your schedule!
  2. Getting a manicure – There’s something about sitting at a nail salon and having an hour to yourself where you can sit back and relax. If getting a manicure or pedicure is your safe place, block off time to do this every few weeks so you can reset your mind and body.
  3. Going on walks – Movement is key to maintaining both a healthy body and mind. Instead of staying cooped up at the office or in your home all day, find time to go on a 30-minute walk each day. If you don’t have 30 minutes to spare consecutively, try breaking it up into three 10-minute walks so you get some fresh air.
  4. Using essential oils – If diffusing essential oils brings you joy and relaxation, always always have essential oils diffusing around your home to evoke a sense of calm during the day. These can also be great to incorporate in the evening to promote a night of relaxation and deep sleep.
  5. Drinking more water – Instead of relying on caffeine from coffee, tea, soda, or energy drinks to get you through the day, refresh your mind by making a point to drink more water throughout the day — especially first thing in the morning to start your day off right!
  6. Planning your meals – It can be easy to fall into an unhealthy slump if there is a lot of chaos in your personal or professional life. When stressed, we often turn to junk food or unhealthy meals instead of taking the time to eat healthily. Encourage a well-rounded diet for yourself by planning your meals out for the entire week and sticking with them.

Keep in mind that these are only a few recommendations to help kickstart your list. Ultimately, your self-care routine needs to be customized to you and can include anything from listening to podcasts and taking a dance class to journaling or getting in touch with nature. Good luck on your journey to a happier and healthier you.
