Eye makeup is truly an art form, and if you’re new to wearing eye makeup, you know how difficult it can be to master even some of the easiest looks. We want everyone to feel confident when applying their eye makeup — whether you’re a beginner or an expert. To do this, we’ve put together a quick guide to four of our favorite looks: the everyday look, the Smokey look, the fun bright color look, and the cat eye look.
The Everyday Eye Look
Eye makeup is a great tool to showcase your bold and vibrant personality. However, sometimes you want a more practical everyday look that adds subtle beauty without overtaking your entire outfit. To create the perfect everyday look, follow these steps:.
Step 1: Neutral tones are the key to an everyday look. Start by applying a thin natural-looking line directly above your upper lashes using a brown eyeliner pencil. The brown shade will be less drastic and have a more natural appearance than classic black eyeliner.
Step 2: Apply pale, matte brown eyeshadow to your eyelid with a slightly darker shade of brown to the crease. The more you emphasize the crease of your eyelid, the larger your eyes will appear.
Step 3: Use an eyelash curler to prep your eyelashes and then apply your favorite mascara.
Step 4: Accentuate the appearance of your eyes by using a brightening pencil to create a thin line along your inner lower eyelid. You may also want to utilize a dab of blush or highlighter right beneath your brow bone, blending it down towards the crease of your eyelid.
The Smokey Eye Look
For a special event or a night out on the town, you may be in the mood for a bold and dramatic makeup look. The Smokey eye is the ideal choice because it adds dimension and texture to your overall look. Although it may seem easy to do, it can actually be tricky to get the perfect Smokey look. Here’s how.
Step 1: Begin by applying a neutral eyeshadow in grey or brown all over your eyelid to create a base.
Step 2: Using your eyeliner, create a line along your lash line. With the end of the eyeliner pencil, if designed for smudging, for with a cotton swab, you should lightly smudge the eyeshadow outward so it appears Smokey.
Step 3: Apply a darker eyeshadow over top of the eyeliner, blending upwards about halfway up your eyelid and creating a Smokey effect on the upper half of the lid. The darkest portion of the eye makeup should be at the lash line, lightning upward. For the ultimate effect, use a small eyeshadow brush and apply the same eyeshadow along the lower lash line as well.
Step 4: Finish up by applying your favorite mascara.
The Fun Bright Color Eye Look
We love a bold and colorful look! But you need to be careful when applying vibrant colors because if done poorly, you may not convey the look you’re going for. To ensure your colorful eyeshadow looks gorgeous, follow these steps for application.
Step 1: Once you’ve selected the bold color palette you’re going with, apply the base color to your eyelid. You’ll want to spend extra time blending the eyeshadow to make it appear more natural, while still making a statement. For a more Smokey appearance, start with a natural base and then apply the colorful eyeshadow to the outer corners of your eye and blend.
Step 2: While blending your color in, determine how intense you want it to be. For a more intense look, wet your eyeshadow brush before applying the eyeshadow. The damp brush will provide a heavier coating that will intensify the look.
Step 3: Emphasize the colorful and bright statement you’re making by using the same (or a complementing color) eyeshadow as the eyeliner. Instead of using a traditional eyeliner pencil, use an eyeliner brush and your eyeshadow to create a bold line as well.
The Cat Eye Look
When you want a subtle look that has a bit more flair than your standard everyday makeup routine, consider the cat eye look. This flirty eye makeup look lets the eyeliner do the talking instead of the eyeshadow. While the look seems simple enough, it can actually be difficult to master. Here are our recommended steps for nailing a perfect (and symmetrical) cat eye look.
Step 1: Close your eye and begin using an eyeliner pencil to draw a line upward and at an angle from the outer corner of your eye. There are recommended angles and line sizes based on the eye shape, so we recommend doing your research before getting started.
Step 2: Using the line you’ve drawn, create a triangle shape by connecting the tip of the line back down to your lash line so it is aligned with the outer edge of your iris.
Step 3: Once you’ve created the triangle, fill it in with your eyeliner pencil and continue smoothing out the area where the cat eye meets the lash line. Continue applying your eyeliner like you normally would, blending it into the cat eye.
Step 4: It can be hard to get the length or angle right on the first try. If you need to correct any mistakes, use a cotton swab to erase or sharpen any areas that need fixing.
Step 5: Once your eyeliner has set in place, apply your favorite mascara to your eyelashes to complete the look.
